Furnace repair

A furnace that won't start, won't stay on or won't heat the house is usually a part, and often a small one.

Signs you need it

  • It clicks but never lights

  • It runs a minute, then shuts off

  • Cold air from the registers

  • A yellow, flickering flame instead of a steady blue one

  • One room warm and the next one cold

The visit

What happens at the visit

  1. 01

Step 1: We call from the corner

You hear from us before the truck is at the door, so you can put the dog away.

  2. 02

Step 2: Carbon monoxide and the flue first

Before the furnace is touched, we take a reading in the room and look at the vent.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Diagnosis

Thermostat, igniter, flame sensor, blower, limit switch and the control board, in the order that finds it fastest.

  4. 04

Step 4: The number, in writing

What we found, the part and the price, on paper before any work starts.

  5. 05

Step 5: The repair and the test run

We run the furnace through a full cycle and take a second carbon monoxide reading at the register.

The cost

What drives the cost

No dollars on this page, because no two basements are alike. The written number carries them.

  • What moves the number

These are the things that make one furnace call different from the next.

    • The part, and whether the maker still sells it

    • The age of the furnace

    • Access: a tight basement or a crawl space

    • The condition of the vent

    • The time of day: nights carry a higher visit fee

  • Repair or replace

A small part on a furnace that otherwise works is a repair. A cracked heat exchanger is not; we show it to you and write it down.

Questions

About furnace repair

My carbon monoxide alarm is going off. What do I do?

Get everyone out, pets too, and call 911 from outside. Don't go back in to reset the alarm or open windows. Once the fire department says the house is clear, call us and we will find out why it happened before anyone relights anything.

What does the visit cost, and what do I get?

The visit fee is on the pricing page, or we tell you on the phone. You get a written number for the repair before any work starts, and if you say no, you owe the visit fee and nothing else.

Repair or replace?

We repair first. A part that costs little on a furnace that otherwise works is a repair. A cracked heat exchanger, or a boiler that leaks from the body, is a replacement conversation, and we write down what we found so you can get a second quote.

What does a repair come with?

The written number says what the part and the labor are covered for, and for how long. Ask us to read it out if the paper isn't clear.
